The Sorrows of Belgium

PDF Great book about how the liberation from Nazi occupation brought a series of further problems to Belgium as they returned to their pre-war government which was no longer feasible and would prove unable to survive beyond the 1960s. The constant political and social crisis is heavily discussed as the author traces the process of normalization and Belgium's subsequent entry into the postwar political order in Western Europe. But he also focuses on the fact that as Belgium went down the road to stability, the restoration of the old order exacerbated problems between Belgium's different social classes and linguistic/cultural communities within the country, essentially saying that achieving stability in one sense caused the unravelling of the state over the next few decades. Great ideas, great examples, and pretty much the only book of its kind so it's a must-read for those interested in postwar Belgian history.
